The problem:

  • Arts-based subjects and ‘creativity’ in schools are under continued threat of curriculum exclusion.
  • University fees go far beyond many individuals affordability; creative skills and training are quickly becoming a preserve of the privileged few.
  • There’s been limited progress in the development of free and open online practice based ARTS MOOCs Massive Open Online Courses.
  • Colleges and Universities see MOOCs as high risk and are looking for external support, hosting etc. There are no practice based MOOC/ online learning community providers.
  • Research suggests MOOCs are mostly benefiting those who already have advanced degrees and the skills and drive to make the most of free education.
  • Research also suggests barriers to accessing open and free education could be due to a lack of web literacies and digital literacies in online learning and citizenship (e.g. participation in online learning communities) and in the social design of online learning environments.
